Zamberlan represent three generations of Italian boot makers who have been constructing boots suitable for every type of terrain since 1929.

The 1000 Baltoro GTX are technical trekking boot designed for back-packing and hard treks. We received the striking royal blue/black pair, which immediately won us over with their bold and colourful style. Packed full of familiar and reliable materials like Gore-Tex and Vibram, we had high hopes for these boots from the outset. Starting on the outside, these boots are constructed from a Hydrobloc Perwanger 2.4mm leather upper, and have chunky dual density PU wedges with Vibram Mulaz Evo and Semi PCS outsoles that provide excellent grip and have a wide support surface at the tip for rocky surfaces. The Cordura inserts and PU protection on the boots’ heel and toe areas help to prevent surface scratches, and the GORE-TEX Performance Comfort lining will not only keep things comfortable but will provide waterproofing and breathability at the same time.

Compatible with semi-automatic crampons, these boots are ideal for tough treks. They deliver a precise and snug fit around the foot, but as with most Italian-designed boots, they run on the slim side, so if you have broader feet you could struggle to find these comfortable. What you gain in durability and protection, you also seem to gain in weight; at 800g per boot they fall into the heavier group of trekking shoes. We also found the 1000 Baltoro GTX to be a little stiff - the added ankle support will attract some but combined with the weight it could be a big turn off for others.

Altogether, the Zamberlan 1000 Baltoro GTX are just about as tough as they come, without sacrificing any of that Italian beauty; if you enjoy treks on the tougher side and have a slim foot shape, these could ideal trekking boots for you. RRP £280
